Journal Prompt: Purpose vs. Meaning

Purpose is fundamentally future-oriented—it answers "what for?" and drives us toward specific goals or outcomes. Purpose provides direction and motivation, whether concrete (becoming a doctor) or abstract (pursuing justice). It's the engine that propels us forward.

Meaning, by contrast, integrates our past, present, and future into a coherent story—it answers "why it matters?" Meaning emerges when we see patterns and connections across our experiences, understanding how they fit into our identity and place in the world.¹

Consider Viktor Frankl, the Holocaust survivor and psychiatrist. His purpose during imprisonment was concrete and immediate: survive each day and help fellow prisoners endure. But his meaning emerged from integrating this horrific experience into a larger narrative about human resilience and the search for significance even in suffering. This integration of past trauma, present understanding, and future possibility became the foundation for his therapeutic approach, logotherapy.²

Reflection Prompt:Think about a significant challenge you've faced. What was your purpose during that time (what you were trying to achieve)? What meaning do you now derive from that experience (how it fits into your larger life story)?
